Barbecue statistics in the United Kingdom

  • The UK is the biggest barbecue country in Europe, with 110 million barbecues held in 2006.


  • Barbecue is the premier home leisure activity in the UK.


  • The number of barbecues held rose from 37 million in 2001 to 75 million in 2004.


  • At 80% of UK barbecues, the food is prepared and cooked by men.


  • Britons spent more than £185 million on bbq grills, charcoal, firelighters, accessories and associated garden furniture in 2006.

  • The most popular drink at a UK barbecue is beer (67%). 22% drink wine and 11% drink other things.


  • The most popular foods at a UK barbecue are - burgers 40%, sausages 28%, chicken 12% and fish 10%.

  • Germany was the biggest barbecue country in Europe until 2005, with more than 103 million barbecues held.


  • Popularity increased after the currency change to Euro in January 2002 made restaurants more expensive and barbecuing became the alternative.

  • France is Europe's #1 for country home owners, with 3 million weekend and holiday homes. This is where most of the barbecuing happens.


  • Since 2000 barbecue sales have doubled in France and TV stations lose more than 20% of viewers to barbecuing on good weather days.


  • In 2006 more than one million new barbecues were sold in France.


  • In the last three years the meat industry in France experienced an increase of 40% in the demand for barbecue cuts, with the market for kebabs alone reaching 3,300 tonnes.

Scandinavia, Holland and Belgium have strong barbecue cultures and the Eastern Europeans are taking to it like a house on fire.
