What is Braai?

Braai is the South African word for barbecue (noun and verb), but it means much more
To a South African braai conjures up an outdoor lifestyle, the pleasure of good company and great food. It is a cross-cultural social phenomenon and traditionally is the only time that men do the cooking.
Braai keeps the basic element of human society, the cooking fire, alive. Before we could control fire, we were eating on the trot - like baboons - and not unlike modern fast food munching. The fire caused us to get together, turn previously indigestible material into good food and build communities. Scientific evidence of the oldest braai (1.5 million years old) was found in the heartland of Captain Barbecue.
